Safety Precautions When Handling a Chef Cleaver

Safety Precautions When Handling a Chef Cleaver

Handling a meat cleaver can be daunting, especially for those new to the world of cooking. While it is an essential tool in any kitchen, it requires proper technique to use safely. Here are the key safety precautions to follow.

Proper Grip and Stance

Always hold the cleaver firmly with your dominant hand, keeping your fingers wrapped securely around the handle. Keep your non-dominant hand in a claw position when guiding meat, with fingers curled inward to protect them from the blade.

Use the Right Cutting Surface

Always use a sturdy, non-slip cutting board — preferably a thick hardwood board for cleaver work. Never use glass or ceramic surfaces, which can damage the blade and cause dangerous deflections.

Store Safely When Not in Use

Store your meat cleaver in a leather sheath or on a magnetic knife strip. Never leave it loose in a drawer where the blade can contact other utensils or where someone could reach in blindly.
