Types of Damascus Steel
Share
Damascus knives come in several distinct types. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right blade for your needs.
Pattern-Welded Damascus
Two or more steels forge-welded together and manipulated to create distinctive patterns including ladder, twist, and raindrop designs. Browse our range at Damascus chef knives and knife making supplies. For the history, read our artistry of Damascus steel guide.
San Mai Damascus
A three-layer construction with a hard steel core sandwiched between two softer outer layers. The hard core holds the cutting edge while the outer layers provide flexibility and resist chipping.
Mosaic Damascus
An advanced form where the billet is arranged to reveal a specific design when cross-sectioned — stars, geometric shapes, custom patterns. Highly skilled work producing the most visually striking blades available.
Choosing the Right Type
For kitchen use, pattern-welded Damascus provides the best balance of edge retention and visual appeal. For collectors, mosaic Damascus is the premium choice. For further reading, see our history of Damascus knives.
